Best Car Gun Safes 2026: Vehicle Lock Boxes Compared

Our pick is the GunVault Range Vault GVRV100BK. A car safe has to do two things a bedside box doesn't: stay attached to the vehicle, and stay out of sight. Why the GunVault Range Vault is our pick

We looked for a steel box from an established maker, with an electronic lock and a key backup, that can be either cabled or bolted down, and with no matching CPSC action. The GVRV100BK meets all of that and has room for spare magazines as well as handguns. It is a lid-opening box with a carry handle, not a console insert, so plan where it sits before you buy.

On 2026-10-17 it was sold by an authorised third-party dealer rather than by Amazon, with limited stock. Check the seller on the listing before you order.

Vehicle storage laws: Colorado, Hawaii and Virginia

Three states now have explicit rules for a firearm left in an unattended vehicle. We read each source on 2026-10-17. This is a summary, not legal advice; the statutes are linked below.

• Colorado (HB24-1348, signed 2024-05-15, in force since 2025-01-01): a handgun in an unattended vehicle must be in a locked hard-sided container placed out of plain view, inside a locked vehicle, locked trunk or locked recreational vehicle. Long guns may use a soft-sided case only with a locking device on the firearm. Violations are a civil infraction. There are exemptions, including farm and ranch vehicles, people living in their vehicle and lawful hunting.
• Hawaii (HRS §134-9.3, enacted 2023): a firearm left in a vehicle out of your immediate control must be locked in a "safe storage depository" out of sight from outside the vehicle. The statute defines that as an impact- and tamper-resistant container that opens only with a key, keypad, combination or similar mechanism, and says a locked trunk or glove box alone does not qualify. Violations are a petty misdemeanor.
• Virginia (§18.2-308.7:2, 2026 Acts chapters 560 and 561 from HB 110 and SB 496): a handgun left in an unattended vehicle must be out of plain view in a locked hard-sided container, which can include a locked container affixed to the vehicle by steel cable, bolt or welding. "Unattended" covers public roads and property and commercial or retail parking where nobody in the vehicle can see it. Violations are a Class 4 misdemeanor.

California has a long-standing rule for handguns in unattended vehicles (Penal Code §25140): a locked trunk, or a locked container out of plain view or fixed to the vehicle. Oregon treats a handgun left visible in an unattended vehicle as not secured.

Every pick here is a lockable hard case. Six are steel; the Vaultek LifePod has a polymer shell. Whether a given box satisfies your state's wording, and whether it must be fixed to the vehicle, is for you to confirm against the current statute.

Pick by how the safe stays in the car

• Bolted in permanently: the Fort Knox FTK-AUTO is a heavy steel box with bolt holes, built to stay put. Its listing calls the lock only "mechanical." It also says "California DOJ Certified," but we could not match it to the roster's single generic Fort Knox entry, so we show that claim as unconfirmed.
• Cabled under a seat: the SentrySafe PP1K and the Bulldog BD1150 are key-lock boxes with tether cables. The PP1K has a carry handle; the Bulldog is a flat box that slides under a seat.
• Travel and checked bags: the Lockdown keyed vault is light and low cost and says it meets TSA requirements. Being light, it needs a cable or a locked trunk to be more than a lid.
• Weather and water: the Vaultek LifePod 10 is a sealed polymer case the maker says is airtight and floats. It fits one compact handgun.
• No batteries: the AMSEC PS1208EZ uses a Simplex-type pushbutton lock in a steel box with a carry handle. Its listing publishes no dimensions, so measure against the maker's spec sheet first.

Recall checks and brand history

None of these seven models matched a CPSC recall or warning in our searches on 2026-10-17. Two brands have actions on other models, which we name here:

• Lockdown: in April 2013 Battenfeld Technologies recalled Lockdown Compact and Large handgun vaults with three-digit combination locks (serials ST120002600 to ST120006800, sold 2012 to 2013) because the lock could fail. Our pick is the keyed vault, not a combination model.
• Bulldog: in February 2024 Bulldog recalled its Magnum biometric pistol vaults BD4030B, BD4040B and BD4055B after unauthorised openings. The BD1150 here is a key-lock car safe and is not in that recall.

California DOJ roster

Four of these seven (the GunVault, Lockdown keyed vault, SentrySafe PP1K and AMSEC PS1208EZ) appear on the California DOJ roster of certified firearm safety devices, which we searched by maker and model on 2026-10-17. The roster lists devices approved to accompany a California firearm sale. It is not a burglary grade. The Bulldog and Vaultek listings make no roster claim.
