How we rate safes
Updated October 16, 2026
We do not test safes. We compare published specifications, independent certifications and public safety records.
What we check
For each pick, we review available fire, water and burglary claims, who made them and what conditions they describe. We compare published construction, lock and backup entry, anchoring, capacity, dimensions and warranty information. We search CPSC for the exact model and brand, recording the date and any relevant action.
Three source labels
A certified badge requires a matching independent directory entry and a dated check. A manufacturer or listing claim stays dashed until then. Missing information is labelled not published; a missing rating is labelled not rated. A California DOJ claim is separate from a burglary or fire rating.
Scores are not yet published
The scoring method is awaiting approval. There are no numeric scores on these example pages. Once approved, any visible score will be labelled our score on a 0–10 scale and will describe a comparison of published data.
Our limits
We do not evaluate real-world fire endurance, forced-entry resistance, biometric bypass resistance or long-term reliability. A recall search does not certify a product as safe. Claims and offers can change; check the exact model and current manufacturer instructions.
Prices and commercial links
