THE VERDICT
At HomeSafe HQ our verdict is that a gun cabinet wins if your only goal is keeping children and visitors away from your guns, and a gun safe wins as soon as fire, theft or California's storage law is part of the question. Most owners who keep guns at home for years end up needing a safe.

A gun safe and a gun cabinet look alike in a product photo. They are built for different threats, and the right one depends on which threat you are buying for. We don't test safes ourselves. We compare published specs, independent certifications and public safety records.
A gun cabinet is a locked steel box. It stops children, guests and anyone without the key or code. It does not stop someone with tools and a few minutes alone, and it does not protect against fire.
A gun safe adds what a cabinet leaves out: thicker steel, heavy locking bolts, a fire lining, and enough weight to be hard to carry away. The better ones carry a UL RSC (Residential Security Container) rating, which means a lab technician with common hand tools could not open the door in five minutes of working time. RSC says nothing about fire, and it does not cover grinders, saws or torches. Our guide to gun safe security ratings explains each level and the steel gauge numbers.
On Amazon, the dividing line is sharp. In our product library, no listing sold as a gun cabinet states a fire duration or a burglary rating. Long gun safes state fire durations, and two makers in our pool state UL RSC.
Children in the home, a few guns: the cabinet wins. The job is keeping small hands away, and a locked steel cabinet does it. Choose a lock you will actually use every time, and keep keys and codes away from the children. Our best gun cabinet roundup covers the options.
A home-defence long gun you need quickly: the cabinet wins, narrowly. A narrow quick-access cabinet with an RFID tag, keypad or fingerprint lock is built to be opened in a hurry, and it fits beside a bed or in a closet where a full safe won't. If you choose a fingerprint lock, read the recall history in our biometric gun safe roundup first.
Guns you would not want stolen: the safe wins. A cabinet buys you seconds against a pry bar. A heavy safe, bolted down, buys time and makes removal hard. A stated UL RSC rating is the only independent burglary test you will find on Amazon.
Fire risk, or guns you can't replace: the safe wins. No cabinet has a fire lining. Even on safes, read the fire claim carefully; most name no lab. Our guide to how fire claims on gun safes work explains what the numbers mean.
You live in California: the safe wins. Since 2026-01-01, SB 53 requires guns at home to be stored in a DOJ-certified safety device or a "secure gun safe" when not carried or under your control. The state's gun-safe standard sets steel, bolt and lock requirements, or accepts a UL RSC rating from a recognised lab. Several cabinets are on the state's safety-device roster, but a roster listing is not the same as meeting the gun-safe standard.
A growing collection: the safe wins. Advertised capacities on both assume tightly packed, unscoped rifles. Buying a safe one size up costs less than buying twice.
Cabinet locks are simpler, and simple can fail. In 2000, Stack-On recalled gun cabinets whose push-button locks could open without the key. Whatever you buy, try the handle without unlocking it after you set it up, and check that a fingerprint reader rejects fingers you didn't enrol.
For the cabinet side, our best gun cabinet roundup is a value list that says plainly there is no fire or burglary rating on any pick. For the safe side, our best long gun safe roundup leads with the models that state a UL RSC rating. If the brand you are weighing is KAER, read our guide; its listings are cabinets. The gun safe hub links every type, and how we rate explains our labels.
