We don't test safes ourselves. We compare published specs, independent certifications and public safety records.
Our pick is the SentrySafe SFW123DSB. A fireproof safe is worth buying for the fire claim and who stands behind it, so we only picked safes whose fire claim names a lab. On Amazon that leaves a short list: three brands, and two of them belong to one company. Within it, the SFW123DSB pairs a UL fire claim and an ETL water claim with a mechanical dial, and it costs less than the two-hour safes. For small papers and passports, a fireproof document safe costs a fraction of any safe here.
We looked for a fire claim that names UL or Intertek (ETL is Intertek's mark), a water claim with a depth and a time, a lock that cannot be opened by the known tricks on cheap electronics, and no matching CPSC action. The SFW123DSB meets all four, as far as public records go. We could not confirm its UL listing in UL's directory, which blocked us, so the table shows it as a listing claim.
Two cautions from its own manual. The dual key is a second lock, not a way in if you forget the combination. And the water rating applies only before you bolt the safe down, because the bolt holes break the seal.
The Master Lock STW123DUB is the same size as our pick, with a fire claim twice as long at a higher temperature. Under UL 72, a longer rating means the furnace runs longer and climbs hotter, so the longer number reflects a harder test. If you live far from a fire station, or in wildfire country, that margin is worth paying for. The STW205GYC gives the same claim with nearly twice the room and a keypad. On 2026-10-17 Amazon listed it as shipping in one to three weeks.
Master Lock's paperwork is messier than its safes. On both models, Amazon's copy gives a lower water depth than Master Lock's own page, and the STW123DUB listing gives a different bolt count. Master Lock's pages, spec sheet and manual describe the drop test four different ways. Our table uses the maker's product page.
Five of the seven picks state a water rating. SentrySafe and Master Lock say ETL verified; Amazon Basics says tested by Intertek, the same lab. Each rating means shallow standing water for a set number of hours, such as a flooded basement floor. None describes deep submersion or a pressure test, and none says whether the safe was soaked straight after its fire test. The two smaller Amazon Basics safes make no water claim at all.
All three Amazon Basics picks say they comply with a modified UL 72 standard, tested by Intertek. That means Intertek ran a version of the UL procedure. It is not a UL classification, and the listing does not say what was modified. The 2420E has the longest of the three claims and the only real key override here: if you forget the code, the key opens it. The YB-66YLA-F and YB-50YLA-F have the shortest fire claim on this page, which suits a safe in a room you can reach quickly, not one in the basement.
The SentrySafe SFW123BTC is the SFW123 body with a fingerprint reader and keypad. Buy it for convenience, not security. LockPickingLawyer opened electronic SentrySafe fire safes by pushing the lock solenoid through the LED hole, and Forbes reported an earlier magnet bypass. We could not confirm whether SentrySafe has since changed the design. Its key is also not an override, so if the reader and the keypad both fail you need SentrySafe's help.
No safe on this page carries a burglary rating. Fire safes use thin steel around a thick fire lining, which is good for heat and poor against a pry bar. Bolt yours down (accepting the water trade-off above), keep it out of plain sight, and for cash or jewellery consider a home security safe as well. Read how fire ratings on safes work for what the minutes and temperatures in the table mean, and how we rate for the labels.
Of the fire safes on Amazon in our 2026-10-11 scan, only SentrySafe, Master Lock and Amazon Basics name a lab for a full-size safe's fire claim. Fortune Brands' 2025 annual report lists Master Lock and SentrySafe as brands in the same security segment, and the two share manuals and support. So this is really two makers plus Amazon's own label. Other brands state long durations, but they name no lab, so they are not on this list.
None of the seven models matched a CPSC recall or warning in our searches on 2026-10-17. Two brands have actions on other products:
We dropped the Honeywell 1503 from this page because it is a chest, and chests now have their own list. You can still read our SentrySafe SFW123DSB vs Honeywell 1503 comparison. For flat papers, see the best fireproof document safes. Before you buy a fire bag instead, read what fireproof bags are actually tested for. For firearms, the long gun safe roundup covers bigger safes with fire claims.
