Our pick is the Fortress GC18-24. Start with what a gun cabinet is: a locked steel box that keeps children, guests and casual hands away from your guns. None of the six picks here has a fire rating or a burglary rating, and no listing in this price band from an established maker does either. That is not a reason to avoid them. Why the Fortress GC18-24 is our pick

For a value roundup, we looked for an established maker, a sensible lock, room for a real collection, a seller you can return it to, and no matching CPSC action. The GC18-24 is a key-lock steel cabinet with a multi-point locking system and a full-length hinge, and Amazon.com sells and ships it. A key lock has no batteries, keypad or fingerprint reader to fail, which matters for something you may open twice a year.

Its listing publishes no steel thickness or dimensions, so measure your space against the maker's sheet before you order. Keep the keys somewhere the people you are locking out can't reach.

What under $500 actually buys

A budget gun safe on Amazon is a cabinet, whatever the title says. In this price range you are buying:

• Sheet steel and a lock. Expect a key, keypad or fingerprint lock on a thin steel body. Where these listings state a gauge, it is usually thinner than the 12-gauge body California sets in its gun-safe standard. Our steel gauge and security ratings guide shows what each gauge means.
• No fire lining. "Fireproof" on a cheap gun safe listing usually refers to an included fabric bag, not the cabinet. None of our picks makes a fire claim.
• No burglary rating. A pry bar or a grinder will get in. Bolt the cabinet to the floor or wall, keep it out of sight, and don't advertise what is inside.
• Child resistance. This is what a cabinet does well. California's safety-device roster lists four of these six picks, and the roster is about keeping a firearm out of the wrong hands, not about burglars.

Pick by how you want to open it

• Keypad, with live bolts: the Fortress 5NFE is a narrow keypad cabinet with a backup key and locking bolts that move with the handle. Fortress calls it a "non-fire" safe, which is honest.
• RFID tag, fast: the Hornady RAPiD Safe Compact Ready Vault opens with a tag, a code or a key, and its Wi-Fi model sends a phone alert when it opens. It is narrow, built for a few long guns rather than a collection. It is on the California DOJ roster.
• Fingerprint, sold by Amazon: the Barska AX11898 is a tall fingerprint cabinet with a key backup that Amazon sells itself. It is on the California DOJ roster.
• Fingerprint or PIN: the Barska AX13646 adds a keypad to the fingerprint reader. Its listing doesn't say whether a backup key is included.
• The best fingerprint reader: the Verifi S6800 uses the same commercial-grade reader as Verifi's handgun safes and runs self-checks every day. It costs about as much as an entry-level long gun safe, so compare it with our long-gun picks before you buy.

Recall checks and brand history

None of these six models matched a CPSC recall or warning in our searches on 2026-10-17. Two notes:

• Fortress: in October 2023 Fortress recalled biometric gun safes 11B20, 44B10, 44B10L, 44B20, 55B20, 55B30, 55B30G, 4BGGBP and 55B30BP. Both Fortress picks here use a key or a keypad and are not in that recall. We left out a Fortress biometric cabinet that is not in the recall either, because a key or keypad does the same job here with less to go wrong.
• Cabinets have failed before: in 2000 Stack-On recalled gun cabinets whose push-button locks could open without the key. Stack-On is not a pick. Whatever you buy, check that the door stays shut when you try the handle without unlocking it.
